Content related ads, do some affiliation service with some online retailer

Honestly for smaller forums your best bet would be selling ad spots to individuals. I mean adsense can make good money compared to most ad companies but for small sites it just takes to long to see your first dollar.

What category or topic is your forum?

Don't even bother monetising until you've established a PR.
