The best sitemap generator available is Google SEo but that only supports 1.6 now.
What's stopping you upgrading to 1.6?? If you want to stay on 1.4 you should at least upgrade to 1.4.14.

It supports both 1.4 and 1.6... in fact it supports 1.4 more than 1.6, since it does not actually handle any of the 1.6 specific features (such as thread prefixes etc.). Either way it will work fine.
