Hey,

I am looking for a chat box, maybe a widget, that people have to login to use.

They login with their forum username and password and can post in the chat.

However the chat can be a specific thread, so people would be posting in a thread whilst not actually being on the forum.

Is this possible?

Well, you can use the AJAX chat plug in and change the settings so its not open to guests. Using it to post to a forum would be a bit harder, but as the ajax chat holds all chat data in the database as long as you like then you could use it like that I guess. Bit of a resource hog though.
