Do Forum Permissions carry down from the parent category? So if I have a category that is only visible to admins will all the forums in there be invisible to everyone else including site crawling bots?

I am fairly sure they will. However you can check te Permissions for the individual subforum anyway.

If you have a category that only staff can see, the forums inside that category are affected by the same permissions.

Crawlbots are handled as guests usually so if the category can be viewed as admin only they should not see any subforums if the subforums do not have other permission settings.
