Send post email to friend missing at the bottom of post/thread view

there is nothing in error log regarding this, but the icon and link is not showing up.

can anyone suggest what would be the reason?

Check that the following is in the showthread template:

<li class="sendthread"><a href="sendthread.php?tid={$tid}">{$lang->send_thread}</a></li>

If that doesn't help can you please provide the URL of your forum.
