is it possible to do this -

to prevent users from reading the forums' content but still
to make it possible 4 them to view the forums in the index page?

You can turn off the 'Hide Private Forums' setting in the Admin CP under Board Settings -> Forum Home Options.

This will show the forums they can't access on the index page however they won't be able to access them or see threads in them.

But if I turn off the 'Hide Private Forums' setting then it will
probably mess up the VIP forums!

(which should NOT be visible)

how about marking those forums you wish to have visible as PUBLIC forums but specify the permissions for that forum separately so no other group but those you want to would have any access to them at all (not even VIEW)

This way you could have your PRIVATE Forums properly private and have some forums that are visible but selective as far as reading/posting etc goes.

ok. sounds a bit nifty though....
