My Dad would not be be willing to do that at all. He wants an NAS, i have had numerous discussions about it with him and he won't budge.

We have tried and tried with the Netgear configuration and it is not working to our liking, so all i wants is recommendations - nothing else.

My post was saying that my NAS runs all of the things my Atom server runs plus it was cheaper and uses less power. There is no need to build a server unless you need dedicated processing power. Depending on how much storage you need, a single bay Synology will suit 99.9% of your needs. I use mine as my main storage for my servers and have an additional USB drive hooked up to it so it backs it up each night so I have 2 local backups.
