Im running mybb 1.6 on a VPS i own, and if i tick use SEO friendly urls in the config panel (not a plugin) it renames them all to like thread-24.html , however it is a 404 error page cannot be found if you try view them.

As it clearly says in the description of the setting, you need to have the .htaccess file in your root folder. Rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess

If that doesn't work, then you don't have mod_rewrite enabled on the server.
