Every now and again my forum gets a sudden spike in the number of guests online. Clicking on the who is online page displays virtually all the guests having the location of 'Viewing No Permissions Page'. An IP search does not associate them with any existing user.

The volume of them is very strange. They appear briefly then the guest count drops back to a normal level. Right now I have 34 guests on my forum and 4 members. The all time record for users online is 43 - which is crazy considering there are only 47 members registered and the site (onemoreinthetolly.com) ranks very lowly on google.

Does anyone know what causes this?

Are they all of a similar IP?? Sometimes spam bots or something get sent to your site at once, there's little you can do about it, apart from .htaccess banning them or something if they've got a similar IP.

Did you checked your pagerank several times?
