Is there anyway to add a username/display name combo to the registration form? because having a separate username and display name makes the forums safer and gives members/staff a less chance of having hacked accounts.

i don't understand some of that.

is it safe for me to use or will i run into problems?

I'm pretty sure you wont have any problems as it just modifies login access and then uses the default username settings. Plus ajs is on the support team so i'm sure he knows what hes doing.
