Edit the nav_sep and nav_sep_active template. Remember to use the HTML entity version of the arrows, don't just put >> in the template.

but the original templates just have / and that's it. so i just entered > and it works fine
The reason I said to use the HTML entity version is if you want your page to validate, using < or > will break the validation, whereas / won't.
ok so what would be the correct way to add > using html as that is what i have at the moment.

you could do >> which would give you 2 >>
