You were right! It was a problem with cookie. I'd already tried to change the cookie path but it did not help. This time, following your advice, I also changed the cookie domain, with the "true" domain, and it works.
There is no need to revert the cookie settings to use the forum since I can login perfectly with the different (true) domain name kept in the settings.
