Hello everyone! Cal here from Denver, wanting to drop in saying hello to an area I have little knowledge programming, but appears most topics are covered optimizing a MyBB forum.

What I would like to pass along what I do know is keyword domains in conjunction with forums of all types for that matter, mine just happens to be a MyBB. Having a keyword domain is the best solution to rank the highest starting out on the web, for that particular term. Also a good idea having the dotnet and dotorg as well having a corner on the phrase. If the keyword or phrase dotcom/net is taken, reverse the words, or better yet, put a hyphen between. This gives search engines a definite break in words to index, and hyphens are not discredited to page rank by search engines.

I am very proud of my domain, just as well as the forum it's self. Has been on the net for approx. 4-5 mos. close to 700 members have joined, without any paid advertising, and little online marketing thus far. I am concentrating on upgrades, improvements, plug-ins, and if anyone has suggestions, I would be more than appreciative hearing from you. Kick starting it right out of the gate, with 1st. page ranking for the keyword phrase "Painting Forum", is the main success, knowing very little else from custom banners to adding additional smilieys and everything in between.

If you have any painting forum questions or painting forum discussions, we would like hearing from you at the, you guessed it, the Painting Forum My
Looks like tones of spam bots have registered. :/

And even though nowadays spam is created by real humans instead of bots, there are ways to reduce it. I recommend installing these plugins:

http://mods.mybb.com/view/stopforumspam-com-for-mybb
http://mods.mybb.com/view/fassim-anitspam
http://mods.mybb.com/view/recaptcha
http://mods.mybb.com/view/registration-s...y-question

These should help stop most spammers during registration. But for those who get in, you can use these:

http://mods.mybb.com/view/goodbye-spammer
http://mods.mybb.com/view/extra-forum-permissions (use the "Can post links?" permission on new users)
http://mybbhacks.zingaburga.com/showthread.php?tid=356

Those last two are, in my opinion, the best protection you can take against spammers. Why? Spammers usually register with the goal to spam your forum with links to their client's websites. By stopping them from using links in signatures, profiles and posts, they will probably leave and never come back. Who cares about a few nonsense posts, it's free content. At least I know they failed their mission!
