Hello, I have exactly the same problem: some JPEG images load and dome don't load (I get quite immediately a blank screen upon upload) !
It is not a matter of size, some 800kB don't load and some bigger instead go smoothly.

But the very wierd thing is this:
*) I have two mybb installation on the same server (CentOS 5 and PHP 5.2.6), either 1.6.1 and 1.6.4, and both show the same behaviour

*) I have one mybb 1.6.1 on another older server (RedHat + PHP 5.1.2) and in this case I havo NO problems at all with JPEG ! :-O

Maybe it is something related to PHP version ?
PHP.INI files are identical at both servers:

max_execution_time = 1800 ; Maximum execution time of each script, in seconds
max_input_time = 60       ; Maximum amount of time each script may spend parsing request data
memory_limit = 32M        ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (32MB)
post_max_size = 300M
upload_max_filesize = 300M
