is there a way to use wget or similar feature to download and unpack mybb without having to transfer every file via ftp?
You can just upload the zip directly to your webserver and just use your server control panel (cPanel etc) to extract it that way.
hmm not sure how to do that with dreamhost - no biggie just wanted to try a faster way next time around
tbh, FTP is better as all hosts should support it. Telnet is more complicated and there's a liability for something to go wrong.

but FTP is not secure, unless you are using SFTP or other tunneled connection.
