Hello, I've looked at the changed MyBB has had in the announcements blog and did some googling, but I didn't find any confirmation.

I'm wondering whether MyBB has made any changes (if core, please point out) changes to its DB structure since 1.4?

There were a lot of changes since MyBB 1.4, just look at the upgrade files.
