It keeps making attding this hideous background..I just want them to look smooth on any color background...without any box around it.

It looks like that theme has a background for the class .inline_rating. The default theme has a transparent background instead. Edit star_ratings.css to fix it.
EDIT: Also, if I remember correctly, the default images MyBB uses have white artifacts that look horrific on dark backgrounds. Jibon Dhara has a Star Rating - For Dark Themes pack.

I donwloaded it..but it is just an image..what m I supposed to do with it..no image file.
Nevermind, I am an idiot....I just replace the star image..thanks!
Now the stars outside the thread (at the top) look great...but the ones embedded in the thread (on light background) look terrible...how do I use thhe light ones for one area and dark for the other?
