I got everything else chmod and i thought i had the avatars folder chmod but when i went to install it says it wasnt writable and i went back to check and it said 766, so i chmod again and clicked the box that says apply to all files and folders within and i tried to install again and it changed back to 766, i have tried a dozen times but it keeps changing back.
I also had that problem.. it worked for me after changing it a couple of times.. keep trying!

Pretty weird. But are you only chmodding the map, are also the contents of it?
yeah, in fact the index in the folder is chmod to 666 but when i chmod the actual folder it wont stay at 666
Try CHMODing the Uploads folder first, then CHMODing the avatar folder. You might not have permissions to chmod in the avatar folder because you don't have permissions to the uploads folder.... just a thought perhaps?
no i did chmod that folder first
make sure it is 777 and not 666
You might also have no permissions to chmod files and directories, make sure of that.
