Is it possible to globally disable automatic subscriptions for threads?

No, it is not possible.

Subscriptions are not disabled there. If you subscribe to a forum for example, you'll still get emails.

You can remove this from the showthread template to get rid of Thread Subscriptions;

<li class="subscription_{$add_remove_subscription}"><a href="usercp2.php?action={$add_remove_subscription}subscription&amp;tid={$tid}&amp;my_post_key={$mybb->post_code}">{$add_remove_subscription_text}</a></li>

I haven't tested this, but I think it would work.
