How do I add links to the mybb menu navigation bar.

Take a look at the header template and look at how the default links are added.

that did not work with my theme

Edit html header. And you will see the list just add the one you want.

That plugin is for the "Default Theme" , I assumed you were using the default theme when you asked "How do I add links to the mybb menu navigation bar"

What theme are you using? What links do you want added? Send me that info and an admin login and ill add them for you if you want me to.

Go to your Admin CP and then head to the Themes or whatever tab, then go to the Templates tab to the left, and click on the theme your using's templates. After that, find the "header" template and edit it.

Why is this plugin not present in mybb site? It should ideally be tested & recommended by mybb community.
