Your tables are getting locked and you have to restart mysql? How big is your forum?
Our members have made a total of 907,080 posts in 863,178 threads.
We currently have 64,297 members registered.

I've been reading a lot of labrocca's threads and I have a smaller board to test things out with, but it's a slow go lol
Simple solutions.

1. Upgrade to MySQL 5.5 and use InnoDB tables.
2. Use the Sphinx Search plugin.

You'll drop your load 500-1000%. And that's not an overestimate.
there are a few steps to this process I am still working on, i thought the Sphinx search plugin was not compatible with 1.6.2
It should be. Unless you have to change the compatibility line.
I now face this issue:

ok thanks to a friend we have Sphinx Search plugin working. I'm just going to keep going here and hope it doesn't piss a staff member off as it's a bit off topic.

What were the steps you took to remove FULLTEXT?
