I'm having issues with links breaking with the link shortening feature on my board. It's random but it seems the longer the link, the more likely it's going to break.

I tried turning off the gzip compression.
I tried it on and a low number (4 and then 3).

Nothing works other than properly formatting the link with BB code and substituting a word for the link. This won't do as my members are never going to format the links. Lord knows I try to make them!

Regardless, it's supposed to work whether they format or not.

I'm running 1.6.2 and I'm sure it worked until 1.6.1

Anyone else have this issue?

This is a board upgraded from 1.4*

Can you give an example of such a link? If it isn't anything illegal of course. Put it in a code tag.

The word wrapping feature is known to break links, if either it's set too low or if the link has a very long sequence of characters. Solution is to disable word wrapping or set it to a larger value.

Frostschutz, I'll give that a try. I never touched the default setting for the link shortening. That makes sense though. Thanks.

Doesn't work!

I tried upping it from 80 to 150 and it breaks. I upped it to 200 and it still breaks.

This is the original link that a member posted on my site that breaks.

When you click it on my site, it takes you to some site in Chinese or something.

OH and just so you know - no matter what you do with word wrapping, the links still shorten.

I turned it completely off and it still wraps and breaks on that link.

It might be a plugin because I tested the url on a clean installation with word wrapping set to 80 and it works fine. What plugins do you have activated?

Damn - I have a ton of them! I guess I'll have to do some testing in the middle of the night when there's no activity. That's going to take awhile - ugh. I'll let you all know once I get that done.

You can always close your board from ACP and test things.

Post a screenshot of the plugin page of you AdminCP and maybe we can already give an indication of the plugins that might cause this problem.

Yes I understand that. I don't want to close the board as it's not really necessary to do these tests. It's just going to take some time because there are so many of them.

Thanks but I'll just test. The list doesn't even show on one page and i'd have to go through a whole business of photoshopping the split list to get it here. I'll be fine testing.

Well, this gets weirder and weirder.

I started my testing and before I did - the links were working just fine. They took me to the correct page on that link.

I used the SAME link TODAY in a NEW post in the same thread and it's broken.
The post above is fine now, (same link) but the new post is not.

I didn't even turn off any plugins yet!

OK so let's update this yet again - In the middle of testing here and the link "fixes" itself while turning on and off plugins.
Keep in mind this does not indicate a plugin is the answer because I can insert the same link again in a new post and it does not "fix" with said plugin turned off.

You can determine whether it's a plugin or not by temporarily stopping all plugins running, saves you wasting time if it's not a plugin.

In ./inc/init.php, find:

define("TIME_NOW", time()); 

Add after:

define("NO_PLUGINS", 1); 

If it's okay after doing this it's a plugin, if it still happens it's something else.
