The most viewable area is the forum right? How about making recommendations for the forum.
It's fine, I guess. Pretty barebones, not much to say about it ...
I think a (well-designed) full length banner at the top would make the page more attractive.

It isn't MyBB but he didn't post it showcase so technically he's not doing anything wrong afaik.
He designed the whole site with PHP, HTML, Javascript and AJAX I believe. Even the forum software.
