whenever i go to my home page it just shows whats in the forum. How do i like post new news and stuff. (also i disabled the calender but the link is still there. how do i get rid of it?)

Not sure what you mean by your first question. To remove the Calendar link you edit the header template, located in Header Templates >> header.

Go to: ACP > Templates > Header Templates > header > Find the following and remove;
<li><a href="{$mybb->settings['bburl']}/calendar.php"><img src="{$theme['imgdir']}/toplinks/calendar.gif" alt="" title="" />{$lang->toplinks_calendar}</a></li>
