why dont you use Google SEO? You dont have to enable any of its features if you dont want to, and your sitemap will be at
yourdomain.com/sitemap-index.xml

You say that you don't want to use google seo, why? As david42 sid you don't need to activate all the features it have.
If you do'nt want to give a reason, than is the only (that i know of) seo-kind of plugin that works on 1.6
