This isn't anything to do with the upgrade, looks like the editor you've got is breaking the smilies. This is the HTML it's producing:

Try it without the WYSIWYG editor.
but before updating these was working fine ..

Well nothing in the upgrade process would have had any effect on this at all, so either you did something else, or it's totally unrelated t the upgrade.
