I just enabled root access but i am still not able to CHMOD the cache/themes/theme1

Any idea on how to fix it?

Probably you didn't have Privileges to Change permissions of your folders. Contact to your host.

Your theme> right click> Set as default [your theme]

I have permissions to change the folders. I have now also CHMODed the .cache/themes/theme1 to 777 but it does not work. Ideas?

You'll get 403 Forbidden, right ? This indicates that you didn't CHMODED properly.

That is very weird. I am pretty sure the CHMOD is correctly set. I just doubled checked and it should be fine. Even called my host Mediatemple to confirm this.
