The reason I'm asking is that I'm (semi-secretly) considering getting a dark theme and I am going to need a transparent set. Certainly now we could realize the problems with gifs now =/.
Renaming the extensions to png should work. I've done it before.
That still makes the images gifs. The partial transparency is what I'm concerned about, since GIFs don't support them.
I personally don't care about Internet Explorer 6 users.

Edit them in GIMP and then save them as PNG then.
No, but that doesn't add the partial transparencies that I need.
No, I don't believe there's a png version of the defaults.
