Chatango is a 3rd party service, is reliable.. and doesn't cause any load or issues for your server.. it's simply javascript with a flash element... any bandwidth usage goes straight to your end user, not your server.. it's the best solution I've found for a community website to date.

The best live chat software I think, for a community type of help setting would have to be IRC. It's not only free (if you don't want to run your own server/network) but it allows for you to ban members, mute them, and have the most control over what the people in your channel can say/do.
