After installation, (which is very good by the way), on my localhost I have registered my wife but cannt get any subject buttons with which to reply etc.
What am I doing wrong??
Check that you are logged in (obvious), but also make sure you haven't changed permissions for the registered usergroup so they can't post replies/threads.
Make sure your forum path is set correctly. I think there shouldn't be a trailing slash in it.
If you've changed themes, make sure the theme is installed correctly.
Make sure the images are not corrupt, perhaps from a bad download.
Are images not showing and you are seeing the alternative text, or just a blank hole where they should be?

There is a blank hole. When I added another subject the icons appeared.
I think I had not set up the forum correctly. Perhaps you could explain how this is done!
Also is there any way I can disable the calendar function?
Open the file calendar.php and search for:
require "./inc/functions_post.php";
Add above:
error("Calendar functionality disabled!");
