Hi. I'm working on a community BB for the neighbourhood. To cut down on spam and disruptive trolls, I'd like to restrict registration to users who have a referral from an existing user. I note this functionality in the documentation:

User Referrals System
Should users be able to specify a referrer when registering?

But I don't see a way to require a referral as such. Is there a way to do what I'm attempting?

The built-in referral system doesn't allow what you want it to do. But you may Request a plugin to do this. One plugin is already developed: http://www.mybbcentral.com/thread-1653.html <-- But its paid though.

Edit: This one is Free: http://mods.mybb.com/archive/view/invitation-only However its for MyBB 1.2.x but you would have to edit it few lines to work it on your 1.6.x board. PM me if you need help regarding this.

That's a reverse point of this thread. OP wants a Referral URL to be sent (before registration) through email which is used a Referred URL.
