Yes, it looks hard, but it really isn't. Read the documentation.
All you need to do is upload the /inc/ folder within the plugin package to the root of your MyBB installation (if it asks you to overwrite the folders, select yes). Then rename the functions.php-1.6.2-googleseo file (don't worry, it works in 1.6.3) to functions.php and upload that to the /inc/ folder. After that, you need to install and activate the plugin in your Admin CP. It will show you a small piece of code which you need to add to your htaccess.txt file (located in the root of your MyBB installation). Finally, rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess (note the dot in the beginning).

That means the htaccess file wasn't setup properly or wasn't renamed. Can you post the contents of your htaccess file?

I've definitely done something wrong - because I edited it before I read your comment, then I didn't delete whatever I did wrong..
