Alright I just installed new icons and don't want to change them. The problem is you can't tell if there is a new thread/post in the forum from the index page. It used to change the forum icons from a blank folder to a highlighted blue folder but I have changed the icons.

What do I need to edit/install to make some sort of indicator that there is a new thread or post in that forum?

Not sure how you did that. But instead, you can try this plugin, which shows both the indicator, and also the icons.
