I'm not asking which one is better, because I think I already know how this is going to turn out. So that's why I went ahead and copied this post and sent it over to the SMF forum, too.... http://www.simplemachines.org/community/...c=440037.0

I've been using phpBB3 on FreeForums and have been impressed with most everything about it, except for my next project can't have any ads on the host. Not really much to complain about, but I think it's maybe the themes that I'm not a fan of. I think... Sleepy

I've installed MyBB and SMF both on my own host and I really like them both. I'm wondering what are some glaring differences between the two that are not so obvious to me now??

P.S. -- Ranking / Karma is a very important feature for my project, as well, and I see that both have it built in. I don't suppose either has the ability to rank threads themselves instead of just comments, eh??
This isn't going to turn out good either way. But for starters, MyBB is open-source software. SMF is not. If you want to compare both, check these links:

You can use thread ratings (The stars) but they won't contribute to a user's reputation. That'd actually make for a good plugin, though, maybe someone will take it up now that it's been mentioned.
You can rate threads in mybb with a star from 1 to 5.
I've never liked SMF because of its version incompatibility of plugin and mods and that those also edit code files.
MyBB is clean and everything hooks in, easier to adjust and is better maintained.
I mean last time I checked SMF 2 wasn't stable, and they've been working on that piece of crap for years so it's a disappointment.
mybb has a thread rating system from 1 star to 5 stars and i also very much like mybbs reputation system just for the fact you can set different groups to give different rep points ie my normal members give 1 rep and admin give 5 rep.

Just for you info smf 2 final is finaly out now.
after all that time it better be.
The thing I hated most about SMF was plugins wouldn't even attempt to autoinstall on theme other than the default it seemed like (Even if I added them after the default one).

Haven't tried SMF in forever but I also remember the interface sucking.

In the end though it will honestly come down to personal preference.

http://mods.mybb.com/view/thank-you-like-system - Sounds like it may work better for you're needs than the default rep system.
SMF released 2.0 a couple weeks ago and is the entire reason I'm asking.

Looks like MyBB already has some pretty quick support. Smile

Most of our community members love to give support, so odds are you'll get faster support here than you will at SMF.
By the way...

SMF 2.0 is BSD-license now!! So even more free than GPL. See here --> http://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comm...r_the_bsd/

I guess I would consider it more, but MyBB has been open-source for FAR longer and I kinda need this now... so MyBB it is!!
