I want to change my theme's default icons for showing that there are new posts, no new posts and a locked forum. I searched for it, but didn't see anything specifically about this.

I can't see these images in my root directory anywhere, so I'm wondering how I would replace them. Thanks.

They're not in your root directory. They're in the /images/ directory and are respectively called on.gif, off.gif and offlock.gif. For example:

Oh, and this will change it in the legend as well?

It will, but don't change the ones in /images directory, because they are for the default theme.

Go to your theme's image directory, and change the on, off, offlock images.

Also, do they have to be .gif? Is it not possible to load a png?
