Is it possible to force someone to log in/sign up to view the forum?

Someone? As in an individual, or guests in general? If its guests in general you can hide the forum by setting the guests usergroup forums and posts permissions.

Hey dude just Uncheck the 'Can View Board' option from the
Guest group, in the Users And Groups section.
