I dunno, aren't these just geeky easter eggs? I've never seen anyone outside of this site use them really.
A lot of the reason why people don't use them is because they aren't made known to members. They are "hidden" and it is up to the administrator to make their members aware of them. They aren't included in any onsite documentation (i.e. Help Files), which is why they are a type of Easter Egg.
I bet if owners made their members aware of them they would become more commonly used.

Do you know any common usage for /slaps?
They are for enjoyment purposes only and help with interaction between members. They can provide quite a lot of amusement in general discussions forums. Especially if the message was altered to suit our needs.
