Yesterday I was looking at who was online on my forum and saw the name Baidu. A google search didn't throw up much. Is it a search engine or something?

Yes, its a Chinese search engine. A bit like google. It provides loads of services (like mail, videos etc).
If you ever want to find out what something is type: "wiki NAMEHERE" into google and see what Wikipedia defines it as. Then you can search around a bit more
