Just jumping in to add my two cents: I have javascript menus, fancy tabs, little frills all over my forum. It looks great - when it finally loads. What I have decided is to totally de-jQueryfy my installation and I am looking for prototype/ajax powered alternatives to do things I REALLY want.
Bear in mind that more and more users are using mobile devices to surf - and mobile stuff is not wild about js - yes you can load a mobile theme, but that's not too handy if you have themes FIXED for certain forums.
