I would like to have a message posted automatically to the thread when a thread is closed.
Does something like this exist?

You can use the Moderator Tools for this. That's how I handle it on my own forum.
Admin CP > Configuration > Moderator Tools > Add New Thread Tool
Open/Close Thread: Closed
