Hi,
When I will upgrade to MyBB 1.8.X from 1.6.15, should I keep my old 1.6 theme and just modify some of the templates, or are there too many templates that need to be edited, that it would be wiser just to use the standard 1.8 theme, and re-code it to look like my older 1.6 theme?

whatever method you chose, this guidance might help => basic theme upgrade from 1.6.x to 1.8.x
I'd prefer using a new theme fully compatible with MyBB 1.8.x instead of updating the old theme

Agreed. I will just get the stock MyBB 1.8 theme, and manually re-code it by hand to look identical to my old theme.
