So Im thinking of making my own theme, a dark one, how do you guys recommend me to start?

Duplicate the default theme, then start changing colors in the .css
Base it off the default theme and you'll maintain the templates -- a better choice when upgrading forum software.
If it's just color, don't need to re-invent the wheel.

Think outside the box. create pages, use preexisting templates, experiment as much as possible, break things, have back ups, restore.
