Has anyone tried? Any major issues encountered? 2.1 was a pretty major version for SMF so I'm not sure how well the merger will cope with it...

I have not tried since I am coming from 2.0.19.
What you could do, if possible, is find a platform that *does* have a converter for SMF 2.1. Then convert to MyBB based off that platform. Just check compatibility.
There is a suggestion here though that you could potentially downgrade by fixing the tables and switching out files... but that could be very risky. Backups everywhere.
Do you have a version of your website saved with 2.0?

Try converting SMF 2.1.x with php 7.4
You dont have to downgrade SMF to 2.0.*
php 8.x doesnt work for this converter
