As for the cache issue why not set a size limit as an option. So clear cache by size or clear cache by days.
That way large boards can opt for cache when it hits say 300k later you could tie in a counter for mentions and always hold them in another cache or automatically recache those that get mentioned a lot. It may be over doing things though. Really you cpuld probably get away with no cache on this plugin. Im going to remove the proper colour coding and usergroup lookup part as its not needed on my site whch will cut down some lookups
