i have uploaded each file from the zip file, is that not enough?

Yes ofcourse.
however u didn't have to upload ./inc/config.php and ./inc/settings.php

righto. I found out what my problem was. the download was corrupt.

Are checksums (ie md5) of the downloads published anywhere? If not... they should be!
