My understanding, correct me if I am wrong, is that "?>" states the end of the file.
I have edited some lang files and put what I wanted above "?>" and it has worked fine for me.

Download the release from the MyBB website and upload ALL of the files with the exception of inc/config.php and inc/settings.php as well as the install folder.

That assumes you haven't modified your board at all and are running on a stock copy of MyBB.
