Profile avatar template?

A theme I'm working on requires me to edit the avatar templates for the member profile. There doesn't appear to be any member_profile_avatar templates, the best is the {$avatar} variable in the member_profile which isn't indepth enough as what I need to edit. Where is the template for the member_profile_avatar, if there is one?

Can't you just edit it using {$memprofile['avatar']}?
