because it is user specific, using the cache is not really feasible

if he was to add basics like the last 5 or 10 users, posts, threads, announcements, birthdays, public events, and other non-current user specific items then he could cache those and pull from there, but that content is not what most folks want to see

Not only that, but those things don't fit my view of an alerts system.
