Excellent choice in allowing you to disable ajax, because of big forum could create problems of cpu usage.
It's possible use a variable to print the number of new notifications like in your test forum ?

Yes, you can access the unread count through {$mybb->user['unreadAlerts']}.
I'd been hoping to release the first beta last week but unfortunately I'm still being plagued by this random link bug on my demo board and have yet to find a satisfactory solution.

How about making this a 1.8 default feature? the timing would be perfect.
