Not Solved Noob Theme Question

Not Solved Information
Hey all,
First off - let me say THANK YOU. I had so much trouble when looking for an open source forum, and the install for myBB was painless. If the product itself works as seamlessly as the install, I can't wait.

Like most web designers, I would really like to customize the new forum, however, I am a little unclear on how themes work. Is there a set of guidelines that theme designers follow, or are they different in each instance?

For example, I downloaded both the Business theme and Beta-X theme so I could try them out (starting with the Business theme), but I hit a wall. It seems like the instructions are different for each, and when I created a folder called "themes" in the root directory and tried to point to the XML file for the Business theme, I received an error.

If I could get some help on this topic I would really appreciate it. The location of the new forum is here:

http://forum.clearwatersky.com/

The business theme is located here:

http://mods.mybb.com/view/1-company

My hope is that I can check out both themes, then develop a custom theme with them as guidelines. Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Every theme should be the same when it comes to uploading, with very few exceptions.

What you'll want to do is upload the XML file through your Admin CP -> Templates & Style section.

After that, using an FTP program, copy the images folder from the theme you're uploading, and drop it into the images folder. In this case, drop the entire 1company folder into your images directory. That should be all you'll have to do.

EDIT: Oh, and drop the javascript file into your jscripts folder. Didn't know that theme came with that at first.

Awesome - it worked! Is there any literature on how to build a custom theme from the ground up? Thank you very very much for your help.

Yes you can make a custom theme from the default. AdminCP-->Templates and Themes-->Create a new theme and then you need to make a template set for this theme Template and Themes-->Template-->Add a new set of Template

Awesome! Thank you very much... I'll probably be back often. Really liking the forum. How do I edit or add my signature to posts? Am I not "registered" yet?

... I think I am...

Also, when I create a new theme based on master MyBB - when I edit the CSS files, are those NEW files that were created somewhere on the server? I'm not actually editing the core CSS files, am I?
